1. Happy Birthday Kurt. Today would have been Kurt Cobain's 50th birthday. That makes me feel old! But outside of aging, I am surprised at how much I actually think about this man. I loved Nirvana the first time I heard them. I was visiting my cousins in Florida and they pulled a cassette tape out of a pool blue case, shoved it into a walkman and my ears were never the same. Besides the music, I started to think about Kurt a lot when I was working with teens and college students in crisis as a psychotherapist. I wish we were better at supporting creative people and not excusing their mental health issues as artistic idiosyncrasies. He needed help. Maybe that help wouldn't have changed the outcome, but maybe it would have.
2. Artsy fartsy. Netflix has a new series called Abstract, and holy shit is it awesome! Abstract is a documentary series highlighting the creative process of a number of well known artists and designers. I won't mention any of the names here, it's a nice surprise to see who appears episode after episode, but seriously the show is truly inspiring.
3. We have been learning a new chant at yoga over the past few weeks. I still don't have it memorized, but I'm getting there. It's a prayer for peace.
Om Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah
Sarve Santu Nir-Aamayaah
Sarve Bhasdraanni Pashyantu
Om Shantih, Shantih, Shantih
May all become happy.
May all be free from illness.
May all see what is auspicious.
May no one suffer.
Peace, Peace, Peace.
