1 2 . 3 1 . 1 6
As we say farewell to 2016 I wanted to share 3 things that I learned this year that have stuck with me. The ones that have sunken deep into my bones and become part of my character. The ones that I now hold as truths.
1. First is self love. Everything starts here. All of it. Life is much, much, much better if you can love yourself. Even if at first it is like 2% of yourself. I'm still working on this idea, but I have seen its power this year and appreciating something, even if it is very small, about myself everyday has really made a difference.
2. The greatest thing we can share with another is history. Whether it is history going on years, or the decision to start a new history with someone, having people in your life who knows you now and knew you when, is priceless.
3. Patience. Ugh. But really, it is something. Patience to understand that things are often just sensations. Patience to know impermanence and all its wonder and grief. Patience to be forgiving. Patience to listen. Patience for feeling stuck. Patience for moments when it seems like the world is falling down around you. And patience to survive the shit storm.
2016 didn't begin or end as planned for many of us. This year was rough, but I've known worse and having the patience for grief has always illuminated the most precious of teachings. Thank you for coming along on the ride with me. Let's continue into 2017 with great resolve, support, strength, joy, and love. Happy New Year!
