I was thinking this morning of Oscar Grant. How back in 2009 it seemed unusual for a black man to be killed by a police officer in Oakland. It wasn't unusual. All those years back at Fruitvale Station were piled on top of hundreds of years of trauma and racism. But in 2009, it somehow seemed like it didn't happen all the time. That shouldn't have mattered. Once is enough. And Oscar wasn't the first. Tragically he has not been the last. That night at Fruitvale Station could have served as a notice. A notice of things to come, a notice of things past. If only we had seen it differently. There is no bringing Oscar Grant back. And this is enough to make any mother cry. A lost child. You don't ever recover from that.
