Buffalo Springfield released the iconic song 50 years ago this December. If you've only really ever heard it in the background, take a listen. It's pretty extraordinary.

3. I read my daughter the first page of 100 Years of Solitude this evening. That's as far as we got. It remains my favorite book and I'll be thinking about that first page through the night into morning. "Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice."
