Of all the things in our cupboard that surprise me the most, it's this antique scale. It's wonky, and when using it for exact weight one must adjust for it's own vulnerabilities, but it has been used in our kitchen more times than I can count. It belongs to my mom and I remember using it growing up to weigh everything from actual recipe ingredients to things my mom would have me weigh to keep me out of her hair while she was cooking. At some point I realized that nothing we cooked had peanuts in it, yet I weighed a bag of peanuts most nights before dinner. Funny enough, the scale often keeps my daughter busy these days while I am tending to other tasks. She's weighed everything from bedrock in our yard, to flour, parcels, and cutlery.
