PROMPT #10 SCISSIORS
I LOVE scissors. All kinds, shapes, sizes. In my studio I have a pair for every purpose. I love the way scissors sound cutting through paper and if the combo is right, I could cut out circles all day long. I still have the orange handled Fiskars that I had in art school. I had put a padlock on them. I'm serious about my scissors.
When I was thinking about what to write tonight, nothing came to mind that seemed to directly connect to scissors. But I'll let you be the judge. Maybe it will all make sense after all.
Sometimes there's just one thing.
1. Each night at 8pm PST the entire county of Marin goes outside and howls. We live on a mountain top and can hear the howls starting toward the east and moving toward the west across our town. We cannot see any of our neighbors from our house, but we hear them above, down below, and across the valley. It's a celebration and a grieving, you can hear it in the different tones and cries that people are releasing into the wind. Sometimes kids just scream. We have too. Sometimes a scream is the right thing to do. It's a moment that I hope none of us forget when the strange and perhaps random decision is made to stop howling. Will we stop? When will we stop? Can we keep doing it once a week? I'm not sure how it will end, or if it will end. But it will be something that we all did together. A way that we all held each other. Acknowledged our need for each other. And expressed the sadness that is so hard to give voice to during the day. We made space for it, together. It was easy to do. And I never want to forget that.
