ALCHEMY EDITION 80

TED LASSO   I admit, I'm a little late to the Ted Lasso game. It was just a few months ago that I dove into the series and as Ted would probably appreciate, he had me at hello. Since then, I've discovered that the show has been the subject of much psychological fodder. And rightly so. There is a lot to think about.    I'm in the process of rewatching the released episodes for the third time and I always discover something new.    What follows are spoilers if you haven't seen the show through season 2.    Right now I am exploring the contrast between Sam's relationship with his father versus Nate's. There's lots of father stuff in the...

FINDING THE SONG “It sounds like he found the song.”   - Famed British record producer Clive Langer on hearing a reworked version of the song The Deportees Club, by Elvis Costello.   I think about this quote a lot. What it means to find the song. How the creative process can happen so quickly and other times be elusive, demand patience, and feel like torture.  Creativity can happen in 15 minutes or take the incredible planning, persistence, and the sweet serendipity of collaborators falling into line like a long con. Both are slow, require commitment to the idea and you never truly know they will work out until the very end. A risk.  And one that creatives take over...

WALLACE J. NICHOLS   One of my favorite things about hosting JOY is how guests discover the podcast. While I appreciate the merits of reaching out to big names to appear on the podcast to increase the audience, that's not how this whole thing started. And I want to talk with who I want to talk with. Social media followers be damned.    Most guests arrive as a friend of a friend, which makes me incredibly happy. I feel like Kevin Bacon in the center of a psych enthusiast 6 degrees of separation. Or to loosely quote Ted Lasso, “I feel like I fell out of the lucky tree and hit every branch on the way down, ended up in...

If you've been following along over on Instagram then you've probably seen an uptick in Keanu related content lately. And it's been my pleasure to provide this simple request for you. I receive many a message about just how happy Keanu seems to be making us these days. So let's lean into that. There's plenty of Keanu content to go around. And if Keanu is a simple pleasure, then he's a pretty simple one to satisfy. More Keanu in 2022.    I've been thinking a lot about what makes him just so interesting. It's clear he is gifted in the looks department. And he has proven over the years the has has got some serious acting chops. He's good at what he...

MINDSET I'd consider MINDSET to be among a list of pop psychology buzzwords that have gained momentum in the last few years. You've probably heard of the concept and how what we believe about our abilities can have a greater impact on our success than what our actual abilities might be. And while it has gained a pop psychology type of reputation, MINDSET has been widely studied and its impact on our wellbeing is backed by some super sexy hard science data.     Dr. Carol Dweck has compiled a fascinating body of research on the concept of Growth Mindset versus Fixed Mindset and specifically how messaging to school aged children around working hard compared to being smart impacts their...
