ALCHEMY EDITION 85

With JOY IS NOW on break until March 20, I thought I'd use this time to adventure in my favorite realm of wide focus. I live by the act of wide focus and thinking from a place of wide focus is something I learned from my study of psychoanalysis. Even in science, exists the capacity to create space and potential in the abstract realm. And this assumed dichotomy between science and the abstract is one of my favorite things about the study of human emotion and behavior. With psychology there is always the opportunity to gather more information from a shift in perspective. Amen.    I'm calling this adventure of wide focus the In Between. Let's go.    NO THANKS...

Music makes my day. I LOVE all kinds. And there are few things that have gotten me through these last years better than music. Music is omnipotently available. Always there when you need it. Flavors the mood and allows you to try on the feelings. Music is miraculous.    One of our favorite past times as of late has been discovering new music. JANA PARKER   JANA PARKER gets shit done. And makes it all look so easy. But she's the first to tell you that it's not. There's no magic potion. JANA makes a really good plan and commits to it. That's her magic.    I first met JANA in 2003. We were both graduate students at San Francisco State University, sharing a handful of classes between the Clinical Psychology and Educational Psychology program. And when I tell you these shared classes were sluggish, I mean I used to try and work the math for exactly how much those classes were costing me per minute. Whatever it was, felt like too much. As a group, we were beyond bored. My instinct when...

ALCHEMY EDITION 81

Friday morning I took a slam. It wasn't the first time I have been hurt skateboarding, but those times I fell. This was a SLAM.    I was playing around in what is known as the big bowl. I've been progressing and working on a little bit of carving. Working my way across an incline, only sideways. More and more each time. It's been fun and stretching myself has really helped me understand how the physics of this ridiculous wooden rectangle on wheels work. I have to be so present when trying something new, one of the reasons I have come to love skateboarding. It is being. Not doing. When my mind wanders, I get tripped up and one way...
